Polki & Lab-Grown Diamonds FAQ

Can polki be lab grown?

Yes, absolutely. "Polki" simply refers to an uncut, raw diamond slice. Just as we can grow clear, faceted diamonds in a laboratory, we can also grow rough diamond crystals and slice them into Polki. Lab-grown Polki offers the exact same traditional, vintage glow and chemical purity as mined Polki, but at a fraction of the cost.

Are Polki diamonds real or fake?

True Polki is 100% real diamond. They are genuine diamonds kept in their natural, unfaceted state. However, buyers must be careful of glass "Kundan" being falsely marketed as real Polki. Always ensure your Polki—whether earth-mined or lab-grown—comes with proper certification.

Is Polki set worth buying?

Aesthetically yes, but traditionally not as an investment. Nothing beats the royal look of a Polki set for a wedding. However, mined Polki often has a low return value because the stones are backed with wax (Lac) and foil. Lab-Grown Polki is becoming the smarter choice, giving you the magnificent regal look without locking up massive funds in a low-resale asset.

How much does a 1 carat lab-grown diamond cost in India?

Between ₹25,000 and ₹45,000 for the stone. In India right now, a high-quality, IGI-certified 1-carat lab-grown diamond typically costs around ₹25k-₹40k. When set in an 18K gold ring, a complete 1-carat solitaire ring usually ranges from ₹45,000 to ₹70,000—a massive saving compared to a ₹3 Lakh+ mined diamond.

What is the difference between Kundan and Polki?

It comes down to the stone used. Both use the traditional Indian Jadau setting technique. However, Polki uses real, uncut diamond slices for a luxurious sparkle. Kundan uses polished glass or inexpensive gemstones, containing zero diamond content, making it significantly cheaper.

Can Lab-Grown Polki tarnish or turn black over time?

The diamond won't, but the foil might. Lab-grown Polki is pure carbon; it will never fade. However, traditional Polki jewelry uses a thin silver foil behind the diamond to reflect light. If exposed to heavy moisture or direct perfume sprays, this foil can tarnish. Always store Polki in airtight boxes.

Will Lab-Grown Polki pass a diamond tester?

Yes, it will. Because lab-grown Polki is made of 100% pure crystallized carbon, it possesses the exact same physical and thermal properties as mined Polki. It will beep and register as a real diamond on a standard thermal diamond tester.
